People of all walks of life love animals and many consider a career that would allow them to work with the same kind of pets that they grew up with a plus. While many people choose a different career path but still keep a dog or cat, others choose to make these animals the focus of their career path. Here are just a few examples of careers where you can help dogs and cats on a daily basis.
Veterinarian
Veterinary medicine is the first career people think of when they consider working with animals. Veterinary schools exist throughout the country, such as the University of Arizona’s veterinary program. These programs require excellent students that prove their academic prowess. Aspiring vegetarians need to take as many math and science courses in high school while college students need to become pre-veterinary science majors and maintain high grades. Volunteering is also recommended. It takes about four years to earn a doctor of veterinarian medicine or veterinary medicines directorate degree.
Veterinary Technician
If becoming a full-fledged veterinarian is not for you, becoming a veterinary technician is another viable option. Veterinary technician programs prepare students for careers in assisting veterinarians or research scientists. Students learn about animal anatomy, laboratory work, testing procedures, surgical care, and sometimes perform duties as X-ray technicians. Watching a video about a day in the life of a veterinary technician will let you know more about what vet techs do.
Animal Breeding, Training and Handling
Many animal lovers often start their own pet store business or at least work or pet store chain. A degree in animal science can help animal lovers rise up the chain of command within a pet store or pet supply company. Other types of jobs within this part of the industry can include dog grooming or handling dogs that shows.
The proper education can also assist animal breeders. Breeders can choose to work with a variety of animals such as dogs, cats, horses, birds, and much more. Success as an animal breeder depends greatly on one’s experience and knowledge. Breeders need to give animals their proper basic care and understand the different health conditions and diseases that can affect them. They also need to ensure that their animals do not have genetic defects like hip dysplasia, hemophilia, or immune diseases. Breeders need to provide the best quality animals and sure that they are going to homes that will take care of them.
Animal Welfare Organizations
Sadly, many complications arise during pet ownership. When these animals become lost, abandoned, or an owner can no longer care for them, various animal organizations provide shelter, medical care, and a new home. These organizations include local animal control centers, humane societies, and animal rescue agencies. There are many different roles in these types of organizations such as management, public relations, animal husbandry, and veterinary care. Employees ensure that animals receive basic veterinary care, vaccinations, and socialization.

Great post, Gracie! I knew Vets had assistants but I didn’t exactly have an idea of what they were called.
Maybe we should also add pet bloggers as a job… although I don’t think it pays as much ^^.

We look forward to you lisitng your jobs on vet network, we hope that this information was useful to you and that you get a large amount of applications to your positions.
You really make it seem really easy along with your presentation however I find this topic to be really something that I feel I’d by no means understand. It sort of feels too complex and extremely extensive for me. I am looking forward for your subsequent publish, I will attempt to get the hang of it!
Great brief intro about other professions apart from standard vets. It would be great to get more insights about each one of these!
